The stepped rice paddies 20 minutes north of Ubud are the image everyone has of Bali's countryside — a valley of green tiers fed by the thousand-year-old subak irrigation system. The site has been commercialised hard (swings, photo nests, donation booths on every path), so the trick is timing: at 7am it's farmers and mist; by 10am it's tour buses. Walk down into the valley and across — most people only look from the road.

Tips
  • Combine with Tirta Empul (holy-spring temple, 15 min) and a Kintamani volcano viewpoint for a classic Ubud-north day
  • Skip the roadside cafés for the view and pay the IDR 25k gate instead — same terraces, no minimum spend
  • Wear shoes that can get muddy; the paths are narrow clay
  • If you want the swing photo, do it here or at Alas Harum, not both
