  • No visa needed — Indians get a free 30-day stamp for tourism, business or transit; the exemption currently runs to 31 Dec 2026
  • Fill the MDAC at imigresen-online.imi.gov.my/mdac within 72h of your flight; screenshot the confirmation — airlines check it at check-in
  • Use the manned immigration counters at KLIA — Indians are not on the autogate list
  • 30 days cannot be extended; overstaying means fines and an entry ban

Not yet. NPCI International and PayNet signed the UPI–DuitNow QR link in Feb 2026 (Phase 1 = Indians paying at DuitNow QR merchants), but it has not gone live — re-check before you promise yourself UPI in KL.
Cash vs card
Cards work everywhere from malls to Grab; hawker stalls, Brickfields eateries and small shops want cash. Malaysian bank ATMs (Maybank, CIMB, Public Bank) add no local fee — withdraw RM 1,000–2,000 at a time and let your forex card do the rest. Change money at licensed counters in Bukit Bintang or Masjid India, never at the airport.

  • Drones need a CAAM permit applied for 14 days ahead — no permit, no flying; fines up to RM 50,000
  • Drug offences carry the death penalty; carry prescriptions for medicines

  • KLIA arrivals touts: 'taxi, sir?' at RM 300–400 — the real fare is under RM 100
  • Money changers in tourist lanes short-counting notes — count twice at a licensed counter with a receipt
  • Card skimming in taxis — pay drivers in cash, cards only in shops
  • Motorbike bag-snatching on Bukit Bintang side streets — bag on the building side, phone away

Culture & etiquette

Dress
Anything goes in malls and Bukit Bintang; mosques lend robes and headscarves, temples want covered shoulders and knees, shoes off.
Tipping
Not expected — restaurants add 10% service; round up Grab fares, RM 5–10 for a helpful driver.
Dos
  • Use your right hand to give, receive and eat
  • Take shoes off at homes, temples and many small shops
  • Point with your thumb, not your index finger
  • During Ramadan, eat and drink discreetly in daytime around Malay areas
Donts
  • Never touch drugs — trafficking carries the death penalty
  • Don't enter a mosque's prayer hall or visit during prayer times
  • Don't touch anyone's head or step over people seated on the floor
  • Don't assume 'Indian' means Hindu — much of KL's Indian community is Muslim or Christian; ask before offering prasad
