  • Fill the MDAC at imigresen-online.imi.gov.my/mdac within 72h of your flight; screenshot the confirmation — airlines check it at check-in
  • Use the manned immigration counters at KLIA — Indians are not on the autogate list
  • 30 days cannot be extended; overstaying means fines and an entry ban

Cash vs card
Cards work everywhere from malls to Grab; hawker stalls, Brickfields eateries and small shops want cash. Malaysian bank ATMs (Maybank, CIMB, Public Bank) add no local fee — withdraw RM 1,000–2,000 at a time and let your forex card do the rest. Change money at licensed counters in Bukit Bintang or Masjid India, never at the airport.

  • Say 'saya vegetarian — tiada daging, tiada ikan, tiada udang'; fish sauce, belacan and ikan bilis count as flavouring, not meat, so name them
  • Nasi lemak sambal is built on shrimp paste and anchovies — ask 'tanpa belacan' or skip the sambal
  • Chinese vegetarian eateries show 素食 on a green sign; Melior Cafe and KOKO Cafe in Kuah are fully veg
  • No pure-veg Indian restaurant on the island — the South Indian places below cook plenty of veg but share a kitchen with meat

Scams
  • Jet-ski damage claims at Cenang — RM 2,500 to RM 13,000 'repair' bills with an indemnity form to back them; video the craft first or skip it
  • Airport and jetty taxi quotes above the coupon board — buy the coupon at the counter or open Grab
  • Scooter rentals want RM 200–300 cash or your passport as deposit — never hand over the passport, photograph every scratch
  • Island-hopping sellers on the strip taking cash for boats that don't show — MOTAC lists 'Langkawi Budget Package Aiman' and 'Langkawifuntrip' as unlicensed; book via the jetty or your hotel
  • Macaques on the Sky Bridge path and the Dayang Bunting lake trail take plastic bags and phones

  • None on land — the risk is the sea: dusk rip currents at Pantai Cenang (two drownings Oct 2025) and box jellyfish Oct–Dec; swim by the rescue tower, never after heavy rain

Culture & etiquette

Dress
Swimwear stays on the beach and at the pool; a cover-up on the Cenang strip and proper clothes in Kuah town, villages and mosques — Kedah is conservative and its officials ask politely.
Tipping
Not expected — restaurants add 10% service; round up Grab fares, RM 5–10 for a boatman or guide who did well.
Dos
  • Buy duty-free liquor and chocolate here — half mainland prices, and Indian customs allows 2 L back
  • Drink at the Cenang bars and your hotel, not on the street or in Kuah town
  • Plan around the Kedah weekend: government offices shut Friday–Saturday, banks shut Saturday–Sunday, shops open daily
  • Use your right hand to give, receive and eat
Donts
  • Don't carry more than 1 L of liquor to the Malaysian mainland, and only after 48 hours on the island — customs checks the jetty and airport
  • Don't feed the eagles or monkeys — chicken-skin feeding is what UNESCO's evaluators flagged
  • Don't ride a scooter without a two-wheeler licence and IDP — weekend-night police roadblocks are routine
  • During Ramadan (about 8 Feb–9 Mar 2027) eat and drink discreetly by day away from the strip
